They can also be placed in the armpit. The procedure is performed by placing an implant beneath the breast tissues. The implants may be placed above or below the muscle covering the chest wall. The patient may choose from silicone gel or saline implants. The surgery typically takes about one and a half to two hours. The patient should be back to work within four days.

Breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis using IV sedation and local anesthesia to create a "twilight sleep". This allows patients to recover without the effects associated with general anesthesia.
